CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In emerging countries like Nigeria, promoting job creators rather than job seekers for university studentss has recently been a hot topic. University may serve as a springboard for deciding on a subsequent career path. This looks to be a critical and pressing issue, as the possibilities of being hired in one’s firm or institution are dwindling by the day. Furthermore, due to the current economic situation, job prospects are becoming increasingly limited for job seekers.

In Nigeria, the government has shown much concern about the unemployment situation and has set up many institutions to assist in creating favourable climate for entrepreneurship development in the country Aluko (2002:32) the Nation is now on the right part to entrepreneurship development in the 21st Century with the ongoing privatization programme. The new emphasis on self-determination is in the line with current policy of promoting private sector dominance Nwatu (2003:18) to this and the government, International agencies and even non-government organizations and the world bank are now showing concern for and commitment to entrepreneurship development in Nigeria

Studies considering individuals’ entrepreneurial intentions is one of the more recent approaches to understanding the entrepreneurial process as has been adopted by Zhao et al., (2005).  An individual’s entrepreneurial intention claims to be a moderate predictor of future entrepreneurial behavior (Kim and Hunter, 1993).

Entrepreneurial intention is the stage that the individual reaches and wishes to engage in entrepreneurial activities such as creating a new venture. Entrepreneurial intention can be attained as a result of certain factors, but according to Akhuemonkhan, Raimi, and Sofoluwe, (2013), intention is developed when the individual is taught and he realizes the value and benefits of entreprneurship. This means that when the individual is equipped with the right entrepreneurship education,  the ability to see opportunities, and the excitement to own a business is developed. This stage that the individual attains is the level of entrepreneurial intention. Entrepreneurship education provides students with the education needed in enhancing their skills, attitudes, knowledge and willingness to become entrepreneurs (Kumara, 2012).

A student may have a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship education because of own competency and self-efficacy but may not make the transition into entrepreneurship because of a lack of intention (Krueger, 2000). Entrepreneurial self-efficacy refers to the strength of a students  belief that he or she will or will not be capable of successfully performing the roles and tasks of an entrepreneur (Chen etal.,2008). This influences their attitude towards entrepreneurship education. According to RauchandFrese (2007), entrepreneurial self-efficacy for starting a new business is a crucial factor in increasing the likelihood of business start-up activity. Every individual who has a high interest in entrepreneurship will be able to stand alone, dare to take decisions and implement the goals to be achieved in its sole discretion. It is said that the higher the self-efficacy, the higher the interest in entrepreneurship education (Bryant, 2006). According to Edelman and Manolova (2008), a variety of learning experiences can be used to expose students to real-world situations. By doing so, it is expected that the students self-efficacy can gradually increase, which is possible as students gain experience by developing complex skills (Iro-Idoro and Iro-Idoro,  2015). A persons self-efficacy towards a task would influence the decisions to take on that task, the amount of effort used on the task and the persistence in accomplishing that task.

1.2 Statement of the Problems

Despite the importance of entrepreneurship to economic development, little research has been done on the role of students in encouraging entrepreneurship. As a result, policymakers should benefit from a deeper understanding of the elements that influence students’ entrepreneurial inclinations (both the government and university). The lack of empirical knowledge on entrepreneurial goals and tendencies in Nigeria influenced our decision to conduct this one-of-a-kind study.

In the circumstances therefore, this paper evaluated the Strategies for Developing Entrepreneurial Mindset and Career Intention Among Secondary School Students in Enugu State.

The study focuses on theStrategies for Developing Entrepreneurial Mindset and Career Intention Among Secondary School Students in Enugu State.  It therefore covers government’s individuals’ and international organization’s efforts to promote entrepreneurship development in Nigeria.
The researcher encountered some limitations however, in carrying out the study. Firstly, collecting data for the study is not easy given the nature of the study. Many individuals approached for information could not cooperate. Secondly, the researcher could have traveled outside the state in search of information and data. But she could not do so for lack of finance.
Finally, the study could not be completed a record time because of the pressure of other academic work on the researcher. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;
