COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RETIRING CIVIL SERVANTS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS RETIREMENT IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study was designed to find out the attitude of Edo state civil servants towards retirement. The researchers embarked on the study due the ugly situation and conditions faced by the retirees in the country and Edo state in particular. Some workers including the retirees have not been properly managed by successive governments. Some are owed several months of salaries, pensions and gratuities. There are several reports of mismanagement and embezzlement of salary, pension and gratuity’s funds which sometimes give rise to protest in some states. The mismanagement of non-contributory pension scheme was the major problem confronting pension administration in Nigeria. In some cases, offenders go with impunity thereby encouraging the evil practice to continue unabated. Inability of government to pay salary, pension and gratuity coupled with the ordeal some pensioners are made to pass through in the hands of the governments has sent many to their untimely graves and these could affect the attitude of the retiring civil servants both and the state and the country at large, hence the study. Three research question and two hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive survey design was adopted. A structured and standardized instrument titled “Workers Retirement Attitude Scale” was used for the study. Aggregate scores were used to answer the research questions while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses. The findings revealed that majority of the retiring civil servants in Edo state have positive attitude towards retirement. Also females and married workers significantly have more positive attitude than the male and single workers respectively. The study recommends among others that government should do everything possible to sustain and improve on the attitude of the civil servants towards retirement.
