THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF HEALTH ZONE

ABSTRACT

Living as a human being, health is taken as a priority everywhere you go to. As the famous saying goes “Health is Wealth”. Some people are wealthy but are not healthy. A person can encounter any illness at any time. A person cannot say that him/her is over having a certain illness because, when it comes you cannot take it back. People are suffering from different kind of diseases all over the world. But in this case the problem is not only the disease but knowing about the diet and what to do when you have a certain illness like papers to read or advice from health proffessionals. Let’s say for example; if a person has hepatitis and diabetes, the person will want to eat healthy food, get reliable source of health facts but the food that you are meant to eat for hepatitis like sugarcane, might not be good for the diabetes. So this is the problem the system is trying to overcome. If a person knows he may get a certain disease due to reasons best known to him or from a specialist, he can manage taking meals, getting health facts and questions answered so that he can reduce or curb the chances of that disease. So in this system, the issue of knowing you might get a disease which can be managed with diet, and reliable health information will be curbed or reduced the rate of the disease.

Therefore, the patient can register for his/her illness on the system and the system will recommend papers, questions and their answers regarding the illness the patient registered for.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

                1.1       Overview

Food is any substance that is or can be consumed by living organisms, especially by eating. Food is usually of plant or animal origin and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals.  Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies like the International Association for Food Protection, World

Resources Institute, World Food Programme. Food is one of the necessities of life which every person needs to live.

Non-Communicable Diseases as the name implies are those kinds of diseases that cannot be transmitted from one person to another. The disease is said to be a noninfectious health condition making it last longer in the body and thus cannot be spread. Examples include; heart attack, stroke, diabetes and sickle cell anemia. Combining the above points food and Non-Communicable Diseases brings up the title of this project. Online Food Recommendation System (accessible by all).

People are ignorant about what they eat. Some know that they are not meant to eat certain things but they eat them because they want to and the food tastes sweeter than the food they are meant to eat.

Seeking medical help from doctors is very good when it comes to health issues. As a sick patient, it is not all food that a person is meant to eat depending on the illness a person is suffering from. This is where the dietician comes to play. A dietician is a person who studies or practices dietetics (the study of diet). A person can consult a dietician to ask for the right proportion of food to eat for a certain illness he/she has.

However, dieticians are not accessible everywhere even if they are, a person has to book for an appointment, pay the bill before seeing the dietician. This is the 21st century, where a lot of things are done online like banking, shopping and the rest. With the modern technologies that are available in today’s world, an online food recommendation system will help in curbing or reducing the tactic process of consulting a dietician, and even getting related articles regarding a person’s illness/disease.

                1.2       Background and Motivation

In this present digital world where a lot of things are now digitalized like shopping, marketing and a lot more. So why not bring the digitalization to the health care sector. The need for an online platform that will pull out articles and recommend food on the most prevalent NonCommunicable Diseases in Nigeria is the motivation for coming up with this project.

                1.3       Statement of the Problem

Health is one of the biggest priorities in life which everyone needs. It is the state of being free from physical or psychological disease. When the issue of health arises then the problem of healthy eating is also considered. Having a disease and trying to keep fit is a problem. In the 21st century where so many things are on the internet, fetching out the authenticated information because hard for the user. Going to the hospital to consult a dietician has its delays, inconveniences, and cost. The problems are:

Information overload on the net.

Because of the AAA Slogan: “Anyone can say Anything about Any topic”, people tend to have different opinions on a particular thing on the internet. This is where information overload comes in. It is hard for people to get authentic information or data on the internet because of information overload.

Having an illness without knowing the right combination of food to eat.     In the world we live today of different kinds of illnesses, a person can have more than a single illness and when this happens most times the right combination of food to eat becomes a problem. For example, a person has diabetes and hepatitis, sugarcane is good for people with hepatitis but bad for people with diabetes. So the decision making for quality proportionate food to eat becomes a problem.

People being ignorant of what they eat regardless of health complications.

People are so ignorant of what they eat, so they need that awareness of the complications of what they are doing to their health. In this app there is provision of articles that will help ignorant people.

Time and cost of getting to a dietician.

This app will curb the problem of the cost of getting to a dietician and also the process by providing an online platform that have access to nutritionist, their advices and also papers that may help.

Convenience issues.

This app is at the comfort zone of everybody as long as there is internet connection. No need to go to the book an appointment with a nutritionist at the hospital.

                1.4        Aim and Objectives

The aim is to create a web application called “Health zone” that will provide advice on diet for certain diseases for the management and prevention of certain diseases. The app has different information in it. It will contain an information system in form of an online repository that will contain articles and answers/questions that will help the user depending on the illness the person searches for restricted to the most prevalent Non- Communicable Diseases recognized by the Nigerian Ministry of Health. To achieve these aims, the following objectives need to be met:

Building the application that enables posting articles answering and writing questions

Getting reliable health professionals that will write articles and also answer questions

Develop a graphical user interface that will make it easier for interacting with the system

                1.5       Significance of the Project

The study is sought to investigate the challenges faced in the current system of consulting a dietician to come up with a new system that will overcome the challenge, thereby having an online repository that will contain records of recommended materials for the user depending on the illness a person searches/registered for. Making it widely accessible by all and reducing the cost of getting access to a dietician. The study will be of great importance to science contribution and the people at large. In the Nigerian ministry of health, Non-communicable diseases are the ones left out among all the rest of the diseases because they cannot be spread. Thus, the development of this software will not only help the user but it also impacts the ministry of health, making progress towards the Non-communicable diseases in the country.
