The Pythagorean Theorem
The Pythagorean theorem states that the square of the length of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) equals the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides. This means that when you measure the length of one leg of a right triangle, you will find that the square of that measurement is equal to the sum of the squares measured along the other two legs.
The Pythagorean Triple
The Pythagorean triple is a special type of 3-4-5 triangle where the three numbers add up to exactly 12. It has been used throughout history as an aid to calculating areas and volumes.
The Pythagorean Triples
The Pythagorean Triple is one of the oldest mathematical concepts known to man. It was first discovered by Greek mathematician Pythagoras (570–495 BC) who noticed that when he added together the squares of two different sides of a right angled triangle, he got a number that was equal to the square of the third side. He called this number “the golden ratio” because it seemed to him to be the perfect proportion between the length of the two other sides.
The Pythagorean Quadrilateral
The Pythagorean Triples are also used in geometry as a basis for constructing more complex shapes such as the regular pentagon. In fact, the regular pentagon has five sides with lengths that are multiples of the golden ratio. This means that there are five points where the lines connecting each pair of opposite vertices meet at angles of 60 degrees.
The Pythagorean Hexagon
The Golden Ratio is an irrational number (a number that cannot be expressed as a fraction) whose value is approximately 1.618033988749894848204586834365638114375. It is named after Greek mathematician Hippasus who first discovered its approximate value.
