Abstract:
Smuggling, the illegal transportation of goods and people across international borders, poses significant challenges for countries worldwide. This study aims to investigate the awareness, causes, and prevalence of smuggling among adolescent students in the Seme and Owode-Apa border areas of Lagos, Nigeria.
The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire will be administered to a sample of adolescent students aged 13 to 19 years from selected schools in the border areas. The questionnaire will assess their awareness of smuggling activities, their perceptions of its causes, and their personal involvement or exposure to smuggling.
To complement the survey data, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions will be conducted with key stakeholders, including teachers, parents, community leaders, law enforcement agencies, and smugglers themselves. These qualitative interviews will provide a deeper understanding of the underlying factors contributing to smuggling among adolescent students.
Data analysis will involve both descriptive statistics for the survey data and thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The prevalence of smuggling among adolescent students will be determined by examining self-reported involvement or exposure to smuggling activities. Factors contributing to smuggling, such as socioeconomic conditions, peer influence, limited educational opportunities, and weak law enforcement, will be explored.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on smuggling and its impact on adolescent students in border areas. The results will inform policymakers, educators, and community leaders about the extent of the problem and help design effective interventions and preventive measures. Enhancing awareness campaigns, strengthening educational opportunities, and improving law enforcement strategies are potential recommendations that may emerge from the study.
