Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the effect of parental socio-economic status on parental care and social adjustment among students participating in the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study recognized the potential influence of parental socio-economic factors on the quality of parental care provided to children and its subsequent impact on their social adjustment. Furthermore, the implications of these findings for counseling were explored.
The study employed a quantitative research design, utilizing survey questionnaires to collect data from a sample of UBE students and their parents in Lagos State. The socio-economic status of parents was assessed through measures such as income, occupation, and educational level. Parental care was evaluated by examining dimensions such as emotional support, supervision, and involvement in the child’s education. Social adjustment was measured by assessing the child’s ability to form positive relationships, cope with challenges, and succeed academically.
The findings indicated a significant association between parental socio-economic status and parental care. Parents with higher socio-economic status were found to provide greater emotional support, supervision, and involvement in their child’s education compared to parents with lower socio-economic status. Additionally, parental socio-economic status was found to have a significant impact on the social adjustment of UBE students, with higher socio-economic status being positively correlated with better social adjustment outcomes.
The implications for counseling in the UBE programme in Lagos State are significant. Counselors should be aware of the potential disparities in parental care and social adjustment based on socio-economic status. They can play a crucial role in providing support and guidance to parents from lower socio-economic backgrounds, helping them develop effective parenting strategies and fostering positive social adjustment in their children. Moreover, counselors can work with schools and community organizations to implement interventions and programs aimed at reducing the impact of socio-economic disparities on parental care and social adjustment.
In conclusion, this study highlights the influence of parental socio-economic status on parental care and social adjustment among UBE students in Lagos State. The findings underscore the importance of addressing socio-economic disparities in counseling interventions to promote positive parenting practices and enhance social adjustment outcomes for all students in the UBE programme.
