Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of implementing Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILS) to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning outcomes at selected secondary schools in Ijebu Ode Local Government Area (LGA) of Ogun State. STEM education plays a crucial role in preparing students for the demands of the 21st-century workforce. Inquiry-based learning is a student-centered approach that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
The research will employ a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques. The study will involve a sample of secondary schools in Ijebu Ode LGA, selected through a purposive sampling method. The participating schools will be provided with dedicated Inquiry Learning Spaces equipped with appropriate resources and materials to facilitate inquiry-based learning experiences.
Quantitative data will be collected through pre and post-tests to measure students’ STEM learning outcomes, including content knowledge, problem-solving skills, and scientific process skills. Additionally, qualitative data will be gathered through classroom observations, interviews, and focus group discussions with teachers and students. This will provide insights into the perceptions, experiences, and challenges related to implementing inquiry-based learning in STEM education.
The collected data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques and thematic analysis. The quantitative analysis will involve comparing pre and post-test scores to determine the impact of ILS on students’ learning outcomes. The qualitative analysis will identify emerging themes, patterns, and challenges associated with implementing ILS in the selected schools.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning approaches in STEM education. By identifying the benefits and challenges of implementing ILS, the study aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing STEM education in Ijebu Ode LGA and potentially other similar contexts. The results will inform educational policymakers, school administrators, and teachers about the potential of ILS in improving STEM learning outcomes and promoting students’ engagement and enthusiasm for STEM subjects.
