Abstract:
The advent of the internet has revolutionized various aspects of human life, including education and reading habits. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the use of the internet and the reading culture of secondary school students in Lagos State. The study focuses on understanding how the increased accessibility and usage of the internet impact students’ reading habits.
The research methodology involves a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A sample of secondary school students from various schools in Lagos State will be selected using a random sampling technique. The participants will be required to complete a survey questionnaire, which will gather information on their internet usage patterns, reading habits, and preferences.
Additionally, focus group discussions and interviews will be conducted with a subset of the participants to gain deeper insights into their perceptions, motivations, and challenges related to reading in the digital era. The qualitative data will be analyzed thematically to identify emerging themes and patterns.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge regarding the impact of the internet on reading culture among secondary school students. It is expected that the results will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and parents in understanding the complex relationship between internet usage and reading habits. Furthermore, the study will explore potential strategies to promote a healthy reading culture within the context of the digital age.
The study’s limitations include potential biases in self-reporting data and the generalizability of the findings to other geographical locations. However, efforts will be made to ensure the sample represents a diverse range of schools and students in Lagos State.
In conclusion, this research aims to shed light on how the use of the internet influences the reading culture of secondary school students in Lagos State. Understanding this relationship is crucial for developing effective strategies that encourage and foster a love for reading in an era dominated by digital technologies.
