SOCIETAL FACTORS IN STUDENT’S CAREER CHOICE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IKOT ABASI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate societal factors that influence student’s career choice in secondary schools students in Ikot Abasi local government area of Akwa Ibom State. Four null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study was a survey research. Out of the twelve (12) Secondary schools in the area, Ikot Abasi, ten (10) were randomly selected and used for the study and a total of 1000 students were involved in the study. A 20 item questionnaire measure of societal factors in students’ career choice was used for data collection. The data so generated was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation co-efficient (e) and tested at 0.05 level of significance. This was compared with critical value of 0.082 with degrees of freedom of 998. The finding of the study revealed prevailing economic conditions in the society, societal attitude to gender roles, influence of peers, mass media and parental socio-economic class as societal factors that exert pressure on students’ career choice. It was suggested among other things the need for government to draw up a well designed school curriculum that emphasizes vocational ambitions especially at the junior secondary level; greater need for schools to embrace work study programme as well
