DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A MOBILE APPLIACATION FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

As long as human activities remain, the formation and production of trash will continue to rise. The consequences and harm caused by poor waste management are extremely dangerous to the world and human health, and this has served as a wake-up call and a need to investigate the situation before it causes even more harm to the world at large. This has prompted the need to look for the best practices to employ to properly manage this waste. Following the latest technological trends, the idea for a mobile waste-collecting application was born, which will aid in improving the quality of waste management and collection. This program provides a good and long-term waste management system that collects rubbish from persons throughout the area to improve the quality of life in the community. The app assists people in contacting the agency, as well as assisting the agency in locating them and collecting waste. The application also facilitates recycling of waste. This mobile application can be used to improve both waste management company performance and individual (client) behaviour. This application ensures that wastes are properly sorted and packaged to liquid, solid, etc for effective disposal.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1         Overview

Waste management is a serious challenge in both urban and rural areas around the world, particularly in the developing world’s fast-growing cities.(Ferronato & Torretta, 2019)  A high rate of population growth combined with an increased rate of trash generation has resulted in a large amount of waste that poses a major threat to the environment and human health. As a result, a decent and clean environment is essential for people’s health and wellbeing.

Furthermore, there is a clear need to shift away from the current waste disposal approach, and focus on municipalities which uses current technology approach to waste processing and waste recycling, which involves both private and public partnerships, with the ultimate goal of waste minimization driven at the community level and using low energy technology resources.

The Chapter discusses the generation, treatment, disposal and management of the growing volume of waste, which poses formidable challenges to both high and low-income countries of the region. (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, 2002)

 

1.2      Background and Motivation

Humans have always produced waste, dating back to the dawn of time and in areas with low population density, waste generation may have been negligible, while in densely populated areas, some wastes are released back into the groundwater with negative environmental consequences. Biodegradable waste has to be dealt with.

It dates back to the Maya of Central America, who had a monthly rite in which the residents of the village would gather and burn their rubbish in enormous piles (Joshua, 2015). In modern-day Syria, the first known waste management system may be found in El Kowm. The Mesopotamian “oasis” in the Fertile Crescent exhibits traces of waste treatment dating back to roughly 6500 BCE. The site of El Kowm is about 120 kilometers northeast of Palmyra, and it has extensive urban planning centered on domestic wastewater drainage.

There is a sophisticated gutter system within residences, as well as the connection of these gutter/drainage systems to larger city systems. Fluids were transported from residences into ditches through these gutter systems, Other planned systems may be seen in the nearby cities, implying that waste management techniques were spread throughout the region. In addition to these systems in Syria, there is evidence of sophisticated waste management systems in other societies in the past. These systems include setting chambers to mitigate the blockages that frequently occur in sewage systems; these chambers provide space for sediment deposits to build up without interfering with the flow of the sewer.

The Romans’ drinking water was contaminated as a result of this pollution (taken from the Tiber), therefore the need for freshwater ultimately resulted in the development of the aqueduct technology which moves water through gravity alone which involves building pipes, ditches, canals, etc. which is used to convey water from the source to its main distribution point.

In Nigeria, the waste management system has proven to be one of the most challenging to manage, as it causes significant damage and harm to both persons and the environment. As a result, a system that can appropriately handle this without causing more damage or injury to the environment or human health is required, which will specifically collect waste products, sort these wastes, and transport them to various dumping locations for disposal or recycling.

With the above background of waste management, it was clear that people were facing a lot of problems as a result of improper waste disposal. As a result, there was a need to modernize waste management, and the motivation to create a mobile application that can make waste collection easier without hindering or harming human health or the environment arose.

 

1.3       Statement of the Problem

Currently, waste management lacks a robust system for monitoring and tracking waste and waste records. People frequently engage in open dumping and uncontrolled burning practices, which affect the environment and persons, since they lack a robust waste system that may be employed in controlling, processing, and scheduling trash dumping activities.

As a result, accumulated garbage and water contamination pose an environmental and health risk.

 

1.4         Aim and Objectives

The project’s goals are to provide

 

  1. a modular and adaptive application.
  2. an application that assists in the collection of waste from various locations.
  • a system for keeping track of garbage records and collections from various locations.

1.5         Significance of the Project

If allowed, the implementation of this initiative has the potential to benefit academia, society, and the entire planet. This study will benefit society by educating people about the value of a clean and healthy environment and the need to maintain it by contracting waste collection agencies through an app.

Furthermore, it provides more knowledge to academia when it comes to waste recycling; the academic world has previously overlooked the importance of the environment and its impact on human health; however, with the help of this research, even the academic world will have a slight or complete understanding of the importance of the environment and the requirements for maintaining it.

Its importance is also apparent in its ability to assist waste agencies in managing and processing their data at a rapid rate, as opposed to the manual techniques of keeping waste records utilizing paper works. By doing so, they will be able to quantify the quantity of garbage produced on a monthly or daily basis, as well as provide space for waste that can be recycled into new items rather than discarding all waste.

The trash management app will make it easier for academia, society, and agencies because it will help you discover and collect waste more quickly, resulting in a cleaner environment in no time.

1.6         Scope/Project Organization

The scope of this project is an appropriate application and for suitable modules such as waste pick-ups schedule, bill generation, vicinity registration, and lastly report generation. This project will be structured in the following format: in this chapter (chapter 1), the work is introduced, chapter 2 will contain the literature review, chapter 3: will contain the requirements, analysis, and design of the project, Chapter 4: will contain the implementation and how testing was carried out and lastly Chapter 5: will contain the discussion, conclusion, and recommendations of the project.
