FIELD TRIP’S IMPACT ON STABILITY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN UYO, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study looked at how field trips affected secondary school students in Uyo, Nigeria, in terms of retention and academic achievement in biology. Pre-test-Post-test Control Group Design was used in the experimental setup. 2934 SS1 children from 19 public schools in Akwa ibom State’s Uyo Educational Zone made up the study’s population. Four (4) out of nineteen schools, two from each the experimental and control groups, were randomly chosen from both urban and rural locations. Field trip instruction was used with the experimental group, while lecture instruction was used with the control group. A total of two hundred student from both urban and rural locations were chosen as the sample size from the four schools using a stratified random sampling technique. The Biology Accomplishment Test (BAT) with a reliability value of 0.83 and the Biology Retention Test (BRT) with a reliability value of 0.85 were the instruments utilized in this study to assess student accomplishment and retention. The impact of field trip teaching strategies on students’ academic progress in biology concepts in the Uyo educational Zone was one of four research topics that were posed. There are no appreciable differences in the mean scores of students who learned biology concepts through field trips and those who learned them through lectures, for example, according to one of the four corresponding hypotheses that were developed and evaluated at a significance level of 0.05. Following data collection, descriptive statistics like mean and standard deviation were used to test the study questions, and inferential statistics like the independent sample test (t-test) were used to test the hypotheses. The study’s findings demonstrated that the experimental group in biology was favoured by the field trip teaching technique. The study provided more evidence that the urban experimental group benefited from the field trip teaching style. One of the main recommendations offered is for the government to mandate the use of the field trip teaching technique, particularly for senior secondary school biology classes.
