Introduction

In today’s fast-paced and competitive business environment, organizations are increasingly relying on projects to implement strategic initiatives, drive growth, and stay ahead of the competition. Effective project management is crucial for the successful execution of projects, as it ensures that goals are achieved within the defined constraints of time, cost, and quality. Project Management Information Systems (PMIS) have emerged as essential tools to support project management processes Yap, C. S., & Soh, C. (2000). PMIS are software applications specifically designed to facilitate the collection, storage, analysis, and dissemination of project-related information. These systems provide a centralized platform where project managers and team members can collaborate, track progress, allocate resources, and make informed decisions throughout the project lifecycle.

The telecom industry, characterized by its dynamic nature and continuous technological advancements, relies heavily on effective project management Meredith, J. R., & Mantel, S. J. (2018). Telecom companies undertake various projects, such as network expansion, infrastructure development, and service deployments, to meet the increasing demands of customers and maintain a competitive edge. However, managing telecom projects successfully requires addressing numerous challenges, including complex stakeholder dynamics, evolving regulatory requirements, and rapid technological changes.

Airtel Nigeria, a prominent player in the Nigerian telecom industry, has been involved in numerous projects to expand its network infrastructure, improve service quality, and introduce innovative offerings. As the telecom landscape continues to evolve, Airtel Nigeria recognizes the importance of leveraging PMIS to enhance project performance, streamline processes, and achieve better project outcomes. However, limited research has been conducted to investigate the specific benefits and challenges of using PMIS in the context of telecom projects, especially in the Nigerian market.

Therefore, this research project aims to fill this research gap by conducting an in-depth investigation into the use of PMIS in enhancing project performance within the telecom industry. The project will focus on a case study of a telecom project undertaken by Airtel Nigeria, examining the implementation, impact, and effectiveness of PMIS in improving project planning, scheduling, resource management, communication, collaboration, monitoring, and risk control.

By conducting this research, valuable insights will be gained into the role of PMIS in the telecom sector and its potential to enhance project performance. The findings of the study will not only benefit Airtel Nigeria but also provide actionable recommendations to other organizations in the telecom industry looking to leverage PMIS effectively. Moreover, the research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on project management and PMIS by providing empirical evidence and practical insights specific to the telecom sector.

1.2 Problem Statement
Despite the growing recognition of PMIS as valuable assets in project management, there is a lack of comprehensive research examining their effectiveness in enhancing project performance, particularly in the telecom industry. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by examining the use of PMIS in a telecom project executed by Airtel Nigeria.

1.3 Research Objectives
The main objective of this research project is to investigate the use of PMIS in enhancing project performance within the telecom industry, using Airtel Nigeria’s telecom project as a case study. The specific objectives are as follows:

To assess the extent of PMIS implementation in Airtel Nigeria’s telecom project.
To analyze the impact of PMIS on project planning, scheduling, and resource management.
To evaluate the effectiveness of PMIS in facilitating communication and collaboration among project stakeholders.
To examine the role of PMIS in monitoring project progress and controlling project risks.
To identify key success factors and challenges in the utilization of PMIS for project performance enhancement.

1.4 Significance of the Study
This research project holds significant implications for both academia and industry.
