Optimizing Utility Power Consumption in Buildings with IoT-Enabled Cloud-Based Energy Management.

Abstract:

This research presents a novel human detection sensor integrated into an Internet of Things (IoT) node, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of human presence detection in buildings. Additionally, the study addresses power management and control challenges in Nigeria, where the power supply falls significantly short of the demand. A 2015 report submitted to the office of the vice president revealed that only 10% of the required power was being supplied, exacerbated by rampant energy wastage in the country. To address these issues, this thesis proposes an effective energy management solution for buildings through the implementation of an IoT-based human detection system and IoT-based power management and control system.

The IoT power management and control board employ a contactless current sensor, streamlining the installation process compared to conventional methods like the series resistance or current transformer methods for current sensing in a load. The developed prototype was successfully implemented, installed, and thoroughly tested in real-world scenarios, generating substantial data for analysis.

The results indicate that the system achieved a remarkable 38% energy saving, primarily due to its ability to automatically switch off the load when no human presence was detected in the installed office space. This research contributes to the advancement of IoT technology in building energy management and offers a promising solution to address energy inefficiencies in the context of inadequate power supply and wasteful consumption practices in Nigeria.
