Abstract:

Enhancing Passive Cooling Strategies in Evolving Shopping Mall Designs

The global landscape of shopping mall trends is witnessing a shift from open precincts to larger enclosed structures. This transformation leans toward creating more controlled and air-conditioned environments, diverging from the earlier open designs seen in arcades and plazas. This transition in Nigeria’s shopping malls is leading to a substantial surge in electricity consumption due to the prevalent reclusive design approach, often resulting in minimal utilization of natural ventilation.

The primary goal of this thesis is to delve into the realm of passive design strategies employed to attain passive cooling within shopping malls. The study objectives encompass an assessment of existing shopping malls and an evaluation of the passive cooling design measures implemented to counteract the impact of excessive heat without resorting to energy-intensive devices. Employing a descriptive survey method, the investigation employs an observation schedule to scrutinize select samples within the study area. This scrutiny aims to ascertain the frequency of implementation and the effectiveness of passive cooling design strategies within these samples.

Analysis and interpretation of the sample data offer insights into the integration of design strategies and their alignment with the objective of achieving optimal thermal comfort, as opposed to being mere aesthetic features. The results underscore the prevalence of various parameters utilized during the study. Remarkably, it becomes evident that shopping malls in Nigeria predominantly lean towards active cooling systems rather than embracing passive cooling strategies. Additionally, the findings illuminate the widespread adoption of courtyards as a means to facilitate air circulation within the buildings. Approximately 40% of the sampled malls incorporate courtyards, while the remaining 60% opt for other types of central openings such as atriums and skylights.

Interestingly, a significant portion, approximately 73%, of respondents report experiencing thermal discomfort predominantly during the afternoon hours. The findings thus unveil a heavy reliance on mechanical devices, including fans and air conditioners, to augment indoor cooling in a substantial portion of the sampled shopping malls.

Ultimately, this thesis underscores the significance of design strategies aimed at minimizing dependence on artificial methods for enhancing passive cooling. Key avenues for achieving this goal encompass meticulous building orientation, effective integration of green landscape elements and vegetation, strategic placement of shading devices, and prudent selection of thermally insulating building materials. These approaches collectively endeavor to establish a more sustainable and energy-efficient cooling paradigm within evolving shopping mall designs.
