ASSESSMENT OF HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS AND WATER TABLE VARIABILITY IN THE GBAKO AQUIFER, NIGER STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract:

This study aimed to analyze water table fluctuations in a set of hand-dug wells and determine their hydraulic properties. The investigation involved measuring water levels, conducting laboratory tests, and analyzing the collected data. The findings revealed that during the rainy season, water levels in the 16 wells ranged from 6.30 to 7.10 meters (minimum) and 25.40 to 26.30 meters (maximum). In contrast, the average water levels during the dry season were 7.60 to 8.90 meters (minimum) and 27.10 to 28.00 meters (maximum). The depths of the examined wells ranged from 11 to 30 meters, with diameters between 0.8 and 1.3 meters.

Hydraulic properties of the aquifer were determined using pumping tests (recovery tests). The results indicated transmissibility values between 7.48 and 26.94 square meters per day, hydraulic conductivity ranging from 1.4 to 8.2 meters per day, and an average specific yield of 14.5%. The study revealed that the aquifer potential in the research area was generally low, consistent with the typical characteristics of basement complex terrains found in the Gbako drainage Basin. The collected data and outcomes of this investigation have practical applications in evaluating and managing groundwater storage, upward flux, water table configuration, as well as groundwater exploration and exploitation. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences (P > 0.05) in water levels among the representative wells, suggesting their location within the same geological formation.
