IMPROVING WAVE PROPERTIES LEARNING WITH IMPROVISED MATERIALS IN SULEJA’S SENIOR SECONDARY

 Abstract:

This study delved into investigating the impact of employing improvised instructional materials on the academic performance and long-term retention of wave properties among senior secondary school physics students. The research adopted a pretest-post-test experimental group design and encompassed senior secondary schools within the Suleja Local Government area of Niger state. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) students were selected using a systematic sampling technique.

Data collection was executed using questions adapted from the National Examination Council (NECO) past theory papers spanning from 1988 to 2010. The items underwent rigorous internal validation, followed by an evaluation by a panel of experts to establish content and criterion-related validity. Reliability was determined through a Test-Re-test method with a two-week interval, yielding a coefficient of R=0.74.

The study formulated four null hypotheses, with three remaining unaltered and one being rejected. Data analysis was performed using the 12.0 version of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The outcomes of this research revealed that the utilization of improvised instructional materials significantly enhances students’ active engagement and interest in the learning process, thereby fostering improved learning and retention abilities. Furthermore, the study disclosed that the practice of improvisation is gender-neutral.

As a recommendation, it is suggested that the government should take proactive steps by organizing seminars, workshops, symposiums, and training sessions aimed at educating educators and stakeholders on the effective utilization of improvised instructional materials. Such initiatives have the potential to significantly augment learning achievements and long-term knowledge retention among students.
