INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT DIETARY LEVELS OF FERMENTED CASSAVA PEEL MEAL ON GROWTH AND EGG PRODUCTIVITY IN JAPANESE

Abstract:

In a 12-week two-phase research study, the impact of incorporating varying levels of fermented cassava peel meal (Manihot esculenta) into the diets of Japanese quails was investigated. Three hundred two-week-old growing quails, comprising both sexes with an initial mean body weight of 27.67 g, were utilized for this study. The birds were randomly distributed into four dietary treatment groups, each containing 75 birds, and each group was replicated three times. These treatments, designated as T1, T2, T3, and T4, consisted of diets with 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% replacement of dietary maize with fermented cassava peel meal (FCPM), respectively.

During the initial 6-week growing phase, various parameters such as feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, nutrient digestibility, and carcass characteristics were evaluated. The results revealed a significant difference in daily feed intake among the treatment groups (P<0.05), while daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio did not exhibit significant differences (P>0.05). Notably, nutrient digestibility varied significantly among the treatment groups (P<0.05). Subsequently, 120 female quails were allocated to four dietary treatments, each consisting of 30 birds, and this laying phase was replicated three times. These quails were fed a layers diet with the same level of maize replacement as in the growing phase. Parameters assessed during the laying phase included daily feed intake, hen-day production, hen-house production, and various egg quality traits (egg weight, egg length, egg width, egg shape index, yolk weight, yolk width, shell thickness, yolk index, Haugh unit, yolk height, albumen height, and albumen weight). The results indicated no significant differences (P>0.05) in daily feed intake, hen-day production, hen-house production, or any of the egg quality traits.

In conclusion, this study suggests that up to 50% of dietary maize can be replaced with FCPM without negatively affecting the growth performance of Japanese quails. Furthermore, up to 75% FCPM replacement in the feed of laying Japanese quails does not appear to have any adverse effects on egg production or egg quality traits.
