ABSTRACT

This case study investigates the implementation and effectiveness of social skills training for students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) in Nigerian schools. Recognizing the critical role of social competence in overall well-being and academic success, this research addresses the need for targeted interventions tailored to the unique challenges faced by students with EBD. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines pre- and post-intervention assessments, interviews with educators and students, and observations of classroom interactions. The research encompasses diverse schools across various regions in Nigeria, providing a comprehensive understanding of the practical application of social skills training. The findings underscore the significant positive impact of social skills training on students with EBD in Nigerian school settings. Through specialized training programs, educators effectively implemented evidence-based strategies to teach and reinforce essential social skills. These interventions led to noticeable improvements in students’ interpersonal relationships, emotional regulation, and overall classroom behavior. Moreover, the study highlights the vital role of collaboration between educators, counselors, and parents in the successful implementation of social skills training. Parental involvement, including training and support, played a pivotal role in reinforcing social skills acquisition and application beyond the school environment. Challenges encountered in the study include limited access to specialized training for educators and resources for sustained implementation. Additionally, there is a need for comprehensive policy frameworks and guidelines to ensure the consistent integration of social skills training programs in Nigerian schools, especially those catering to students with EBD. This case study offers valuable insights into the practical application of social skills training for students with EBD in Nigerian schools. It emphasizes the transformative potential of targeted interventions in enhancing social competence, ultimately contributing to improved overall functioning and academic success for students with EBD. The findings provide a foundation for educators, counselors, policymakers, and parents to collaborate in creating more inclusive and supportive learning environments for students with EBD in Nigeria.
