ABSTRACT

This case study delves into the design and execution of transition planning programs tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities in Nigerian secondary schools. As the global discourse on inclusive education gains momentum, ensuring a seamless transition to post-secondary life for students with disabilities has become imperative. However, Nigeria’s educational landscape, marked by diverse cultural contexts and resource disparities, calls for a focused investigation of transition planning practices. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, this study incorporates surveys, interviews, and case analyses to gather comprehensive data from a purposively selected cohort of secondary schools across varied regions in Nigeria. The research examines the experiences of students with disabilities, their parents, educators, and school administrators, with a particular emphasis on the effectiveness of transition planning in facilitating a smooth progression to further education, employment, or independent living. the critical role of tailored transition planning programs in shaping the future trajectories of students with disabilities. Positive outcomes include increased post-secondary enrollment, improved vocational preparedness, and enhanced self-determination skills. Key success factors encompass early and comprehensive assessment, collaborative planning involving parents, educators, and community stakeholders, and the provision of targeted resources and support services the study provides practical recommendations to strengthen transition planning for students with disabilities in Nigerian secondary schools. These recommendations encompass targeted professional development for educators, increased resource allocation, and community engagement initiatives. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding towards individuals with disabilities within the broader educational community. the Nigerian educational context, this case study contributes to a growing body of knowledge on inclusive practices for students with disabilities. It offers practical insights that can inform policy decisions, teacher training programs, and resource allocation strategies aimed at creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for students with disabilities in Nigeria.
