THE INFLUENCE OF TELFAIRIA OCCIDENTALIS AND AMARANTHUS HYBRIDUS ON INDUCED HYPERLIPIDEMIA IN WISTAR RATS

Abstract:

Hyperlipidemia encompasses a spectrum of inherited and acquired disorders characterized by elevated lipid levels in the body. In Nigeria, the prevalence of obesity ranges from 8.1% to 22.2%, with overweight individuals comprising 20.3% to 35.1% of the population. By 2020, an estimated twelve million Nigerians were living with obesity, with a notably higher prevalence among women. This medical condition is intricately linked to metabolic dysfunction, and while the precise etiology of metabolic syndrome is multifaceted, research suggests that insulin resistance plays a pivotal role. Individuals with excess weight often develop resistance to insulin, a hormone crucial for regulating blood sugar levels.

Emerging evidence suggests that leafy vegetables may possess therapeutic properties capable of mitigating the comorbidities associated with hyperlipidemia. This study sought to assess the potential ameliorative effects of diets enriched with three distinct leafy vegetables (Telfairia occidentalis, Celosia argentea, and Amaranthus hybridus) on hyperlipidemia, a metabolic aberration associated with induced obesity in female Wistar rats. The phytoconstituents of these vegetables were quantified, and active compounds were identified using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

Thirty-five female rats were meticulously allocated into seven groups (I – VII), comprising three treatment groups, a negative control group fed a standard diet, and a positive control group receiving a reference drug. The impact of a sustained high-fat diet was also assessed. Notably, all vegetable-based formulated diets induced significant weight loss, with Telfairia occidentalis demonstrating the most pronounced effects on weight reduction and reproductive hormone levels. Moreover, the reference drug exhibited significant regression in serum lipid levels compared to other treatments, with a notable decrease observed in the HFD+ugwu group.

In conclusion, the formulated diets exerted a notable ameliorative effect on metabolic dysfunctions associated with hyperlipidemia in rats. These findings suggest that such diets could be explored as potential interventions in the management of obesity and related conditions.
