ABSTRACT

The study focuses on the comprehensive evaluation of physio-chemical and microbial parameters in the effluent of fish ponds. The aim is to assess the quality of wastewater generated from these aquaculture systems and its potential environmental impact. Water samples were collected over a period of twelve months and subjected to a battery of analytical tests. Physio-chemical parameters, including pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total suspended solids (TSS), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), were analyzed using standard methods. Additionally, microbial assessments involved the enumeration of total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria. Results showed significant variations in physio-chemical parameters, indicating seasonal influences on water quality. Furthermore, microbial analyses revealed the presence of coliform bacteria, emphasizing the necessity for proper treatment prior to discharge. This study provides critical insights into the water quality of fish pond effluent and underscores the importance of implementing sustainable management practices to mitigate potential environmental repercussions.
