Abstract:
Effective management and protection of records are essential for the efficient functioning of any society. In Nigeria, where records play a vital role in governance, business operations, and personal transactions, it is crucial to assess the awareness and perception of Nigerian citizens regarding the management and protection of their records. This study aims to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Nigerian citizens towards record management and protection.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A representative sample of Nigerian citizens across different demographics will be selected, and data will be collected using structured questionnaires. The surveys will focus on assessing the awareness levels of respondents regarding record management practices, such as record creation, organization, retention, and disposal. Additionally, the surveys will explore the citizens’ understanding of the risks associated with poor record management, including data breaches, identity theft, and loss of important information.
The qualitative interviews will provide in-depth insights into the citizens’ perceptions of the current record management practices in Nigeria. The interviews will explore their experiences and challenges with record keeping, their trust in government and private organizations to protect their records, and their suggestions for improving record management systems.
The findings of this study will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the awareness and perceptions of Nigerian citizens regarding the management and protection of their records. The results can inform policymakers, government agencies, and private organisations about the gaps in understanding and areas for improvement in record management practises. This research may also guide the development of public awareness campaigns, educational programmes, and policy interventions aimed at promoting better record management practises and enhancing data protection measures in Nigeria.
