COMPUTER IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DYKSTRA-PARSONS METHOD OF WATERFLOOD CALCULATIONS

Abstract:
The Dykstra-Parson technique is widely recognized as one of the most commonly used waterflood methods in the petroleum industry. In this study, the authors have developed a discrete, analytical solution based on the Dykstra-Parson method to determine waterflood performance parameters. Building upon this foundation, Reznik et al have extended the work of Dykstra and Parson by introducing exact, analytical, continuous solutions. These solutions incorporate explicit formulas for time, constant injection pressure, constant overall injection rate conditions, assuming piston-like displacement.

The objective of this work is to present a computer implementation that compares the results obtained from the Dykstra-Parson method and the extension proposed by Reznik et al. To facilitate practical usage by petroleum engineers and industry professionals, a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) executable application has been developed using Python 3 and Tkinter. This application serves as a hands-on tool, providing a convenient means to apply the Dykstra-Parson method and the Reznik et al extension.

To validate the accuracy of the computer implementation, the results obtained from both methods were compared with those obtained from simulation performed with Flow, an Open Porous Media software. The outcomes of the program for both methods demonstrated a close match with the simulation results, indicating the reliability and effectiveness of the implemented techniques.

The utilization of the developed GUI application offers valuable insights into the underlying principles and applications of the Dykstra-Parson and Reznik et al methods. This comparative analysis provides a practical tool for petroleum engineers and industry professionals to evaluate and optimize waterflood performance in oil reservoirs, enhancing the overall understanding of waterflood techniques and their potential applications.
