EVALUATING UNCERTAINTY IN THE VOLUMES OF FLUIDS IN PLACE IN AN OFFSHORE NIGER DELTA FIELD

Abstract:

The accurate estimation of fluid volumes in hydrocarbon reservoirs is crucial for effective field development planning and production optimization. In offshore environments, such as the Niger Delta, where oil and gas exploration and production activities are prevalent, there is a need to evaluate and quantify the uncertainties associated with the volumes of fluids in place. This abstract presents an overview of a study aimed at evaluating uncertainty in the volumes of fluids in place in an offshore Niger Delta field.

The study employs a comprehensive approach that incorporates geological, geophysical, and engineering data to characterize the reservoir and estimate fluid volumes. The reservoir characterization includes the analysis of seismic data, well logs, core samples, and other available geological and geophysical information. These data are used to construct a detailed geological model, which serves as the basis for estimating the volumes of oil, gas, and water in the reservoir.

To evaluate uncertainty, various stochastic modeling techniques are employed, such as Monte Carlo simulation and history matching. Multiple realizations of the reservoir properties are generated, considering the inherent uncertainties in the input data. These realizations are then used to simulate fluid flow and perform production forecasting. The results from the simulations provide a range of possible fluid volume scenarios, along with their associated uncertainties.

The study also incorporates uncertainty analysis in the estimation of petrophysical properties, such as porosity and permeability, which significantly influence fluid volumes. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to identify the key parameters that contribute most to the overall uncertainty in the volumes of fluids in place.

The findings from this study contribute to a better understanding of the uncertainties inherent in fluid volume estimations in offshore Niger Delta fields. The quantification of uncertainties enables decision-makers to make informed judgments regarding field development strategies, production planning, and risk management. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of integrating multiple data sources and employing advanced modeling techniques to improve the accuracy and reliability of fluid volume estimations.
