EFFECTS OF CASSAVA-LEAF-ENHANCED CARBONITRIDING ON CASE-HARDENING OF BARITE MINING TOOLS

Abstract:

Barite mining is a vital industry that relies on robust and durable tools to extract and process barite ore effectively. The case-hardening of mining tools plays a crucial role in enhancing their wear resistance and extending their service life. Carbonitriding is a widely adopted case-hardening process that involves the diffusion of carbon and nitrogen into the surface layers of steel to form a hardened and wear-resistant case.

This study investigates the effects of cassava leaf-enhanced carbonitriding on the case-hardening of barite mining tools. Cassava leaves, known for their high cyanide content, are utilized as a potential carbonitriding medium due to their ability to release cyanide during heat treatment. The presence of cyanide facilitates the diffusion of carbon and nitrogen into the steel surface, leading to enhanced hardness and wear resistance.

The research methodology encompasses several stages. Initially, barite mining tools made of steel are carefully selected and prepared for carbonitriding. The cassava leaves are collected, processed, and mixed with a suitable carrier material. The tools are then packed in this cassava leaf-carrier mixture and subjected to controlled heat treatment in a furnace. Different process parameters, such as temperature, time, and cassava leaf concentration, are systematically varied to assess their impact on the case-hardening performance.

The case-hardened tools are evaluated using various characterization techniques. Microstructural analysis, hardness testing, wear resistance assessment, and chemical analysis are conducted to determine the depth of the hardened layer, hardness distribution, wear resistance, and the presence of carbon and nitrogen within the case. Comparative studies are also performed with conventional carbonitriding processes using different carbon and nitrogen sources.

The findings of this study aim to provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of cassava leaf-enhanced carbonitriding in improving the case-hardening performance of barite mining tools. The results will contribute to enhancing the wear resistance and durability of these tools, leading to improved operational efficiency and reduced downtime in the barite mining industry. Moreover, the utilization of cassava leaves as a carbonitriding medium presents a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional methods, promoting the reuse of agricultural waste and reducing environmental impact.
