Abstract:
Reinforced concrete is a widely used construction material in Nigeria, and its structural integrity is crucial for ensuring the safety and durability of buildings and infrastructure. This study aims to investigate the properties of cement mortar and steel commonly employed in reinforced concrete structures in Nigeria, with a focus on their quality, performance, and adherence to relevant standards.

The investigation begins by examining the characteristics and composition of cement mortar used in the Nigerian construction industry. Various cement types and their respective strengths, workability, and setting time are evaluated. Additionally, factors such as fineness, chemical composition, and consistency are analyzed to assess the quality and suitability of cement mortar for reinforced concrete applications.

Furthermore, the study investigates the steel reinforcement used in reinforced concrete structures in Nigeria. The properties of reinforcement steel, including yield strength, tensile strength, and ductility, are examined to ensure compliance with national and international standards. The presence of impurities, such as sulfur and phosphorus, is also considered, as they can significantly affect the steel’s performance and durability.

The investigation involves field surveys and laboratory testing of cement mortar and steel samples collected from various construction sites across Nigeria. Test methods, including compressive strength tests, water-cement ratio analysis, chemical analysis, and tensile tests, are employed to evaluate the quality and performance of the materials.
