AN EVALUATION OF VAPING AND E-CIGARETTES IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
The rapid rise in popularity of vaping and e-cigarettes has raised concerns about their potential health effects and their impact on public health. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence, patterns, and perceptions of vaping and e-cigarette use in Nigeria, with a particular focus on their implications for public health.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather information on the prevalence of vaping and e-cigarette use in Nigeria. The review also explored the potential health effects associated with vaping and e-cigarette use, as well as the regulatory framework governing their sale, distribution, and use in the country.

Findings from the literature review revealed that vaping and e-cigarette use in Nigeria has seen a significant increase in recent years, particularly among the youth and young adults. The availability and accessibility of these products, coupled with aggressive marketing strategies, have contributed to their growing popularity. However, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the prevalence and patterns of use, making it challenging to assess the full extent of the issue.

The potential health effects of vaping and e-cigarette use remain a subject of ongoing debate. While some studies suggest that these products may be less harmful than traditional tobacco cigarettes, others have highlighted concerns regarding their long-term effects, including respiratory and cardiovascular risks. Additionally, there is limited awareness among users about the potential risks associated with these products.

The regulatory framework surrounding vaping and e-cigarettes in Nigeria is still evolving. Existing regulations primarily focus on traditional tobacco products, and there is a need for specific policies and guidelines tailored to address the unique challenges posed by vaping and e-cigarette use. Strengthening regulatory measures, including age restrictions, product labeling, and marketing restrictions, is crucial to protect public health and minimize potential harm.

In conclusion, the rise in vaping and e-cigarette use in Nigeria requires urgent attention from public health authorities. Comprehensive data collection and surveillance systems are needed to monitor the prevalence and patterns of use accurately. Additionally, public health campaigns should focus on raising awareness about the potential risks associated with these products and promoting evidence-based cessation strategies. Strengthening the regulatory framework is essential to safeguard public health, particularly among vulnerable populations such as youth and young adults.
