AN EXAMINATION OF SEXUAL AND GENDER MINORITY YOUTH AND SUDS IN NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study aims to explore the relationship between sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth and substance use disorders (SUDs) in Nigeria. SGM youth, including individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+), face unique challenges and experiences that may contribute to their increased vulnerability to SUDs. However, research on this topic in the Nigerian context is limited.
The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to investigate the prevalence of SUDs among SGM youth in Nigeria. The survey will gather data on participants’ demographic characteristics, sexual and gender identities, substance use patterns, and mental health indicators. Additionally, interviews will be conducted to gain deeper insights into the lived experiences of SGM youth and the factors that may influence their substance use behaviors.
Through this research, the study aims to achieve several objectives. Firstly, it seeks to provide empirical data on the prevalence of SUDs among SGM youth in Nigeria, which can inform policymakers, healthcare professionals, and advocacy organizations in developing targeted interventions and support systems. Secondly, it aims to identify the unique risk and protective factors associated with SUDs among SGM youth and explore the intersectional dynamics of multiple identities (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status) in shaping substance use patterns.
The findings from this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on SGM youth and SUDs, with a specific focus on the Nigerian context. By shedding light on the experiences of SGM youth and their substance use behaviors, this research can help foster a better understanding of the challenges they face and inform the development of culturally sensitive interventions and policies to address their specific needs. Ultimately, this study aims to promote the health and well-being of SGM youth in Nigeria and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable society.
