PROBLEM-DRINKING BEHAVIOURS AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
Problem-drinking behaviours among college students are a growing concern worldwide, including in Nigeria. This abstract provides an overview of the problem-drinking behaviours prevalent among college students in Nigeria, highlighting the associated factors and potential consequences.

The study draws upon existing literature, surveys, and research conducted in Nigeria to examine the prevalence, patterns, and determinants of problem-drinking behaviours among college students in the country.

Results indicate that problem-drinking behaviours are a significant issue among college students in Nigeria. The prevalence of alcohol consumption among students is high, with binge drinking being a common pattern. Several factors contribute to the onset and persistence of problem-drinking behaviours, such as peer influence, stress, availability and accessibility of alcohol, cultural norms, and inadequate awareness of the risks associated with excessive drinking.

Problem-drinking behaviours among college students in Nigeria have various negative consequences. These include academic problems, impaired physical and mental health, risky sexual behaviors, interpersonal conflicts, and involvement in accidents or violent incidents. Additionally, problem-drinking behaviours may also lead to long-term alcohol addiction and dependency, further exacerbating the negative outcomes.

Addressing problem-drinking behaviours among college students in Nigeria requires a multifaceted approach. This approach should involve interventions at individual, interpersonal, and environmental levels. Strategies may include educational campaigns to increase awareness about the risks of excessive drinking, promoting responsible drinking behaviors, providing counseling and support services for students struggling with alcohol-related issues, implementing stricter alcohol control policies on college campuses, and fostering a supportive and healthy campus environment.

In conclusion, problem-drinking behaviours among college students in Nigeria pose significant challenges to their well-being and academic success. Addressing this issue requires collaborative efforts from educational institutions, government agencies, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders to implement evidence-based interventions and policies that promote responsible drinking behaviors and support students in making healthier choices regarding alcohol consumption.
