THE CAUSE AND PROBLEM OF GRIEF AND ADDICTION AMONG MALE STUDENTS IN NIGERIA: CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF UYO

Abstract:
Grief and addiction are two critical issues that significantly impact the mental health and overall well-being of individuals, including male students. This case study focuses on the University of Uyo, Nigeria, to explore the causes and problems associated with grief and addiction among male students. The study aims to shed light on the unique challenges faced by this specific population and contribute to the existing literature on mental health in Nigerian universities.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The study targets male students enrolled at the University of Uyo, utilizing a stratified random sampling technique to ensure representation across various faculties and levels of study. The quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical methods, including descriptive statistics and inferential analysis, to identify prevalence rates, patterns, and correlations related to grief and addiction. The qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis to gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to grief and addiction among male students.

The research hypothesizes that several factors contribute to the prevalence of grief and addiction among male students, including academic pressure, social isolation, financial constraints, and cultural expectations. The study also explores the potential interplay between grief and addiction, aiming to uncover whether grief acts as a catalyst for addiction or vice versa.

The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the experiences and challenges faced by male students at the University of Uyo. The results will inform the development of targeted interventions and support programs to address grief and addiction issues among this population. Moreover, the study’s outcomes may have broader implications for mental health policies and practices in Nigerian universities and contribute to a better understanding of the global phenomenon of grief and addiction among college students.
