AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF SELF-HELP GROUPS ON WOMEN’S ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL EMPOWERMENT IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the contribution of self-help groups to women’s economic and social empowerment in Nigeria. Self-help groups have gained significant attention as a means to empower women and promote their socio-economic well-being. This research explores the extent to which these groups have fostered empowerment among women in Nigeria and identifies the specific areas in which they have made a positive impact.

The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Qualitative data will be collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with women who are members of self-help groups. Additionally, quantitative data will be gathered through surveys administered to both self-help group members and non-members. The study population will include women from diverse socio-economic backgrounds across different regions of Nigeria.

The research will explore how self-help groups have contributed to women’s economic empowerment by examining factors such as income generation, access to credit and financial resources, and entrepreneurship development. Additionally, it will investigate the impact of self-help groups on social empowerment, including women’s participation in decision-making processes, access to education and healthcare, and improvements in gender equality and social status.

The findings of this study are expected to shed light on the effectiveness of self-help groups in promoting women’s economic and social empowerment in Nigeria. The research will provide insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by these groups, as well as recommendations for enhancing their impact. The outcomes will be valuable for policymakers, development practitioners, and other stakeholders involved in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Nigeria.
