GENDER ANALYSIS ON POST-HARVEST MANAGEMENT OF SHIFERAWU (MORINGA STENOPETALS IN NIGERIA
Abstract:
Gender analysis plays a crucial role in understanding the diverse roles and responsibilities of men and women in agricultural activities, including post-harvest management. This abstract presents a gender analysis conducted on the post-harvest management of Shiferawu (Moringa stenopetala) in Nigeria. Shiferawu, a valuable multipurpose tree, holds significant potential for addressing food security, nutrition, and income generation challenges in the country.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and household surveys were conducted among men and women engaged in post-harvest activities related to Shiferawu. The research aimed to explore gender dynamics, roles, and constraints in post-harvest management, and identify opportunities for gender-responsive interventions.
Findings revealed that gender norms and cultural practices influenced the division of labor and decision-making processes in post-harvest management. Women primarily handled activities such as cleaning, sorting, and drying of Shiferawu leaves and seeds, while men were involved in processing, packaging, and marketing. Furthermore, women faced several gender-based constraints, including limited access to productive resources, inadequate training, and limited participation in decision-making forums.
Despite these challenges, the study identified several opportunities for enhancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in Shiferawu post-harvest management. These include providing targeted training programs for women, promoting women’s participation in decision-making processes, improving access to credit and markets, and strengthening supportive policies and institutions.
In conclusion, this gender analysis highlights the importance of considering gender dynamics and inequalities in post-harvest management of Shiferawu. Addressing these gender disparities can contribute to improved productivity, livelihoods, and overall sustainability of Shiferawu value chains in Nigeria. The findings of this study can inform policy and programmatic interventions aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the agricultural sector.
