Abstract:
Substance abuse is a significant public health concern globally, and it disproportionately affects certain marginalized populations, including LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) individuals. This abstract focuses on exploring the substance abuse factors among LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria, a country where same-sex relationships are criminalized and stigmatized.

The study aims to examine the unique factors that contribute to substance abuse among LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria and shed light on the challenges they face in accessing appropriate support and treatment. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, utilizing academic databases, research articles, and reports to gather relevant information.

The findings reveal that LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria experience heightened vulnerability to substance abuse due to several interconnected factors. These factors include social stigma, discrimination, and violence, which contribute to a hostile environment that fosters secrecy and limited social support. Internalized homophobia, the fear of rejection, and the absence of legal protection also contribute to increased stress and mental health issues, leading some individuals to turn to substance use as a coping mechanism.

Furthermore, limited access to comprehensive healthcare services, including culturally competent addiction treatment, exacerbates the challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals seeking support for substance abuse. The criminalization of same-sex relationships in Nigeria creates barriers to seeking help, as fear of legal consequences and societal backlash discourages individuals from seeking assistance openly.

This abstract underscores the urgent need for tailored interventions and policies that address the unique substance abuse factors faced by LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria. Culturally sensitive healthcare services, including addiction treatment programs, should be developed to provide a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ individuals to seek help without fear of discrimination. Additionally, advocacy efforts to challenge discriminatory laws and promote societal acceptance and understanding are essential to reduce the stigma and create an enabling environment for LGBTQ individuals.

In conclusion, this abstract highlights the complex interplay of various factors contributing to substance abuse among LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria. By understanding these factors, policymakers, healthcare providers, and advocacy groups can work together to develop effective strategies to prevent and address substance abuse specifically tailored to the needs of this vulnerable population.
