THE IMPACT OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS OF FAMILIES ON PARENTAL BEHAVIOURAL APPROACH TO ADOLESCENTS AND ITS IMPLICATION FOR SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
This abstract explores the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on parental behavioural approaches towards adolescents and its implications for social work practice in Nigeria. Socioeconomic status refers to the social and economic position of individuals or families based on factors such as income, education, occupation, and wealth. The study examines how socioeconomic status influences parental behaviours towards adolescents and the subsequent effects on the well-being of Nigerian youth.

The research draws on existing literature on socioeconomic status, parenting styles, and adolescent development. It investigates how socioeconomic disparities in Nigeria contribute to variations in parental behavioural approaches, such as authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, or neglectful parenting styles. Furthermore, the study explores the potential consequences of these parenting styles on adolescent outcomes, including academic performance, mental health, and social adjustment.

The implications for social work practice in Nigeria are also discussed. Social workers play a crucial role in supporting families and promoting positive parenting practices. By understanding the impact of socioeconomic status on parental behaviours, social workers can tailor interventions to address the specific needs of families from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This may involve providing resources, educational programs, and counseling services to enhance parenting skills and strengthen family relationships.

It is expected that this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the intersection of socioeconomic status, parental behaviours, and adolescent development in Nigeria. The findings will provide insights for policymakers, social workers, and other professionals working with families and adolescents, helping them develop targeted interventions that promote positive parenting practices and improve the overall well-being of Nigerian youth.
