However, there is ongoing debate regarding the most effective type of stretching for promoting recovery and injury prevention. This abstract aims to summarize the current understanding of the effects of different types of stretching on recovery and injury prevention.

Static stretching, characterized by holding a muscle in an elongated position, was traditionally recommended as a pre-exercise routine. However, recent research has raised concerns about its potential negative impact on performance, particularly when performed immediately before high-intensity activities. Static stretching has been shown to transiently decrease muscle strength and power output, which may impair performance in activities requiring explosive movements.

On the other hand, dynamic stretching, involving controlled movements that mimic the intended activity, has gained popularity as a pre-exercise routine. Dynamic stretching is believed to improve muscle activation and increase range of motion, priming the body for the specific movements to follow. It has shown positive effects on subsequent performance, particularly in activities requiring power and speed.

Another type of stretching gaining attention is proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching. PNF techniques involve a combination of stretching and muscle contraction to enhance flexibility. PNF stretching has demonstrated promising results in improving range of motion and flexibility.
