INVESTIGATING THE ROLE OF MICROBIAL PATHOGENS IN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES. 

Abstract:

Autoimmune diseases are a diverse group of disorders characterized by an abnormal immune response against self-antigens, resulting in chronic inflammation and tissue damage. While the exact etiology of autoimmune diseases remains largely unknown, emerging evidence suggests that microbial pathogens may play a significant role in their development and progression. This abstract provides an overview of the current research investigating the association between microbial pathogens and autoimmune diseases.

Numerous studies have implicated a variety of microbial pathogens in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. These pathogens include viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Viruses such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) have been linked to the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), multiple sclerosis (MS), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), respectively. Bacterial infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes and Chlamydia pneumoniae have been associated with the onset of rheumatic fever and reactive arthritis, respectively.

The mechanisms by which microbial pathogens contribute to autoimmune diseases are multifaceted. One proposed mechanism involves molecular mimicry, where microbial antigens resemble self-antigens, leading to the activation of autoreactive immune responses. Another mechanism involves the dysregulation of the immune system, triggered by persistent or chronic infections, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. Additionally, microbial infections can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiota, which has been implicated in the development of autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
