Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the educational landscape, necessitating the adoption of alternative teaching methods to ensure continuity of learning. This study explores the attitudes of business educators towards the use of WhatsApp as a teaching tool during the COVID-19 pandemic in colleges of education in Nigeria.
The research employs a quantitative approach, utilizing a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from a sample of business educators in selected colleges of education in Nigeria. The questionnaire assesses educators’ perceptions, experiences, and attitudes towards the use of WhatsApp as a teaching tool during the pandemic.
The findings reveal that business educators generally hold a positive attitude towards the use of WhatsApp in teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. They perceive WhatsApp as a useful and effective platform for delivering educational content, facilitating student engagement, and promoting interactive learning experiences. Additionally, educators report that WhatsApp enables them to maintain regular communication with students, share resources, provide timely feedback, and address students’ concerns.
However, certain challenges associated with the use of WhatsApp in teaching during the pandemic are identified. These challenges include limited access to stable internet connectivity, privacy concerns, difficulties in managing large class sizes, and the need for additional training and technological support to maximize the platform’s potential.
The study suggests that colleges of education in Nigeria should provide adequate resources, training, and support to educators to enhance their proficiency in using WhatsApp for teaching purposes. Policymakers, education administrators, and institutions should also consider investing in infrastructure and internet connectivity to ensure equitable access to technology among educators and students.
Overall, the findings highlight the potential of WhatsApp as a valuable teaching tool during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigerian colleges of education. By addressing the identified challenges and promoting effective use, WhatsApp can contribute to the delivery of quality education and improve student learning outcomes in the face of unprecedented disruptions caused by the pandemic.
