Abstract:
The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in improving the self-esteem of adolescents from broken homes in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study addressed the need to explore therapeutic interventions that can enhance the psychological well-being of adolescents who have experienced parental separation or divorce.
The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group. The participants consisted of 80 adolescents aged 13 to 18, who were divided into three groups: an ACT group, an REBT group, and a control group. The ACT group received interventions based on the principles of acceptance and commitment, while the REBT group received interventions focusing on identifying and challenging irrational beliefs. The control group did not receive any specific therapy during the study.
The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was administered to measure the participants’ self-esteem before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to compare the changes in self-esteem scores among the three groups.
The results indicated that both ACT and REBT therapies had a significant positive impact on the self-esteem of adolescents from broken homes. The ACT group and the REBT group showed a significant increase in self-esteem scores compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the ACT and REBT groups concerning the improvement in self-esteem.
These findings suggest that both ACT and REBT therapies can be effective approaches to enhance the self-esteem of adolescents from broken homes in Ogun State, Nigeria. Mental health professionals and practitioners working with adolescents in similar contexts can consider incorporating these therapeutic interventions into their practice to support positive psychological development.
Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of ACT and REBT therapies on self-esteem and to investigate other psychological variables that may be influenced by these interventions. Additionally, qualitative research methods could provide valuable insights into the subjective experiences and perceptions of adolescents undergoing these therapies in the context of broken homes.
