SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS, SEXUAL NETWORKING AND ADOLESCENTS’ HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP IN LAGOS METROPOLIS

Abstract:

This abstract provides a concise overview of a study conducted in Lagos Metropolis, exploring the interplay between social environments, sexual networking, and adolescents’ heterosexual relationships. The study aims to gain insights into the factors influencing the formation, dynamics, and outcomes of these relationships among adolescents in an urban setting.

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. Lagos Metropolis, as a rapidly growing urban center, presents a unique context for studying adolescents’ heterosexual relationships due to its diverse social environments and cultural complexities.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to gather comprehensive data on adolescents’ social networks, sexual behaviors, and relationship experiences. A sample of adolescents aged 15-19 years from different socioeconomic backgrounds and educational levels will be selected using a stratified random sampling technique.

The quantitative phase involves administering structured surveys to collect data on participants’ social environments, including family, peers, schools, and neighborhoods. This will enable the identification of social factors that influence adolescents’ sexual networking patterns and relationship choices. Additionally, the surveys will explore the prevalence of risky sexual behaviors, contraceptive use, and the impact of social support structures on relationship dynamics.

The qualitative phase will involve in-depth interviews with a subset of participants to gain deeper insights into their perceptions, experiences, and motivations related to heterosexual relationships. These interviews will explore topics such as cultural norms, gender roles, peer pressure, and the influence of media in shaping adolescents’ attitudes and behaviors in the realm of romantic relationships.

Data analysis will involve both quantitative techniques, such as statistical analysis and network analysis, and qualitative thematic analysis. The integration of findings from both phases will provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between social environments, sexual networking, and adolescents’ heterosexual relationships in Lagos Metropolis.

The study’s findings will contribute to the existing literature on adolescent sexual health and inform the design of targeted interventions and policies aimed at promoting healthy relationship formation and sexual behavior among adolescents in urban settings. By understanding the social and cultural context within which these relationships develop, stakeholders can develop effective strategies to address associated risks and enhance the well-being of adolescents in Lagos Metropolis.
