Abstract:
This study examines the personal and environmental predictors influencing the retention of girl children in schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Education is a fundamental right and a key factor in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. However, various challenges hinder the successful retention of girl children in educational institutions, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Understanding the factors that contribute to the retention of girl children is essential for policymakers and educators to develop effective strategies and interventions.
The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The quantitative phase involves collecting data through structured questionnaires administered to a representative sample of girl students across different schools in Lagos State. The questionnaire includes variables related to personal factors such as family background, socio-economic status, parental education, and cultural beliefs. Environmental factors such as school infrastructure, safety, availability of basic amenities, and distance to school are also assessed.
Additionally, the qualitative phase involves in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and school administrators. These interviews aim to provide insights into the contextual factors affecting girl child retention and explore potential solutions to address the identified challenges.
The findings of this study will provide empirical evidence on the personal and environmental predictors influencing the retention of girl children in Lagos State schools. The results will contribute to the existing body of knowledge and inform policymakers, educators, and relevant stakeholders about the specific interventions needed to improve girl child retention rates. By identifying and addressing the barriers to girl child education, this research aims to promote gender equality, enhance educational opportunities, and empower girls in Lagos State, Nigeria.
