Abstract:
This abstract provides a concise overview of the escalating incidents of gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic era and discusses its implications for national development. The COVID-19 pandemic not only posed significant health challenges but also exacerbated existing gender inequalities and heightened the vulnerability of women and girls to various forms of violence.

The lockdown measures implemented to curb the spread of the virus inadvertently led to increased cases of GBV, as victims were forced to remain in close proximity with their abusers, and access to support services became limited. Additionally, economic hardships resulting from the pandemic further exacerbated the already precarious situation, contributing to the rise in GBV incidents.

This abstract emphasizes the implications of the spiraling GBV incidents on national development. GBV has far-reaching consequences, not only for the victims but also for society as a whole. It hampers women’s participation in the workforce, limits their access to education and healthcare, and perpetuates cycles of poverty. The long-term impact of GBV on the well-being and productivity of individuals and communities can hinder Nigeria’s progress towards achieving sustainable development goals.

The abstract highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the issue of GBV in Nigeria. These measures should include strengthening legal frameworks to protect victims, improving access to justice, enhancing support services such as shelters and helplines, and implementing robust awareness campaigns to challenge societal norms that perpetuate violence against women. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of addressing the underlying factors contributing to GBV, such as gender inequality, poverty, and inadequate education.

In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the already significant problem of GBV in Nigeria, with severe implications for national development. Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach involving government commitment, civil society organizations, and international cooperation. By tackling GBV effectively, Nigeria can create an environment that promotes gender equality, social justice, and inclusive development for all its citizens.
