Abstract:
This study investigates the role of assistive technology, self-esteem, and home factors as predictors of social adjustment among students with visual impairment in Lagos State, Nigeria. Social adjustment is a crucial aspect of the overall development and well-being of individuals, particularly for students with visual impairment who face unique challenges in social interactions. Understanding the factors that contribute to their social adjustment can inform interventions and support mechanisms to enhance their social integration and overall quality of life.

The study employs a quantitative research design, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of students with visual impairment in Lagos State. The questionnaire measures the participants’ utilization of assistive technology, self-esteem levels, home environment, and social adjustment. Statistical analysis techniques such as regression analysis and correlation analysis are used to examine the relationships between the variables and to determine the predictive power of assistive technology, self-esteem, and home factors on social adjustment.

The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on the specific factors that influence the social adjustment of students with visual impairment in Lagos State. It is anticipated that the results will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and families in developing effective strategies and interventions to improve the social experiences and integration of these students within their educational and social environments.

The research aims to highlight the importance of assistive technology in facilitating social adjustment by enhancing access to information, communication, and educational resources. Additionally, it explores the role of self-esteem as a psychological factor that influences the students’ confidence, self-perception, and social interactions. Moreover, the study investigates the impact of home factors, such as family support, parental involvement, and the physical home environment, on the social adjustment of students with visual impairment.

By examining the interplay between assistive technology, self-esteem, and home factors, this study offers valuable insights into the complex dynamics that affect the social adjustment of students with visual impairment. The results can inform the development of comprehensive support systems that address the unique needs of these students, foster their social skills, and promote inclusive educational environments. Ultimately, the study aims to contribute to the empowerment and social integration of students with visual impairment, thus promoting their overall well-being and quality of life.
