Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study investigating the relationship between family types and truancy behavior among secondary school students in the Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State. The primary objective of this research is to understand how different family types may influence truancy behavior among adolescents.
The study utilized a quantitative research design, employing a questionnaire survey to collect data from a sample of secondary school students in the area. The questionnaire consisted of items related to family structure, parental involvement, socio-economic status, and truancy behavior. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests and regression analysis.
The findings revealed that family types significantly influence truancy behavior among secondary school students. Specifically, students from single-parent families were found to exhibit higher rates of truancy compared to those from intact families. Moreover, the study identified parental involvement and socio-economic status as important mediating factors in this relationship. Students with higher levels of parental involvement and greater socio-economic advantages were less likely to engage in truancy behavior.
These results highlight the importance of family dynamics in shaping truancy behavior among secondary school students. The findings suggest that interventions aimed at reducing truancy should consider the specific challenges faced by students from single-parent families. Additionally, promoting parental involvement and providing necessary support to families from lower socio-economic backgrounds may help mitigate truancy behavior among adolescents.
This study contributes to the growing body of literature on truancy behavior and its association with family dynamics. It provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and practitioners in developing targeted interventions to address truancy issues in the Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State. Further research is recommended to explore additional factors that may influence truancy behavior and to assess the long-term impact of interventions targeting family types on reducing truancy rates among secondary school students.
