Abstract:
Street hawking is a prevalent economic activity among young individuals in many developing countries, including Nigeria. While it provides a means of income generation for individuals, the practice has often been associated with negative consequences, particularly for the social adjustment of secondary school students. This study aimed to examine the impact of street hawking on the social adjustment of secondary school students in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The study employed a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of secondary school students in the Mushin Local Government Area was selected through a multistage sampling technique. The participants were assessed using standardized measures of social adjustment, including indicators of academic performance, peer relationships, emotional well-being, and behavioral adjustment.

The findings revealed that a significant proportion of secondary school students in Mushin Local Government Area engage in street hawking activities. The practice of street hawking was found to have a negative impact on the social adjustment of these students. Students engaged in street hawking reported lower academic performance, reduced involvement in extracurricular activities, strained peer relationships, increased emotional distress, and higher rates of behavioral problems compared to their non-hawking counterparts.

Qualitative interviews provided further insights into the underlying factors contributing to the negative impact of street hawking on social adjustment. These factors included limited access to educational resources, increased exposure to risky environments, disrupted daily routines, and the absence of parental supervision.

The study concludes that street hawking has detrimental effects on the social adjustment of secondary school students in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions that address the root causes of street hawking and provide alternative opportunities for income generation and educational advancement. Such interventions should involve collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, parents, and community-based organizations to ensure the holistic development and well-being of secondary school students in the study area and similar contexts.
