Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of religiosity, locus of control, and values on identity formation among early adolescents attending private secondary schools in Nnewi North Local Government. Identity formation is a critical developmental process during adolescence, and understanding the factors that contribute to it is essential for promoting healthy psychological and social well-being.
The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing survey questionnaires to collect data from a sample of early adolescents (aged 12-15) enrolled in private secondary schools in Nnewi North Local Government. The research instrument includes measures of religiosity, locus of control, values, and identity formation.
The findings of the study provide insights into the relationship between religiosity, locus of control, values, and identity formation among early adolescents. The results demonstrate that religiosity plays a significant role in shaping the identity formation process, as adolescents who exhibit higher levels of religiosity tend to have a stronger sense of identity.
Furthermore, the study reveals that locus of control, which refers to an individual’s belief about the extent to which they can control events in their lives, influences identity formation. Adolescents with an internal locus of control are more likely to have a well-developed sense of identity, while those with an external locus of control may struggle with identity formation.
Additionally, values, such as moral and cultural beliefs, contribute to the formation of adolescent identity. The study shows that adolescents who prioritize certain values, such as family, education, and community, are more likely to develop a coherent and stable sense of identity.
These findings have important implications for educators, parents, and policymakers. Recognizing the influence of religiosity, locus of control, and values on identity formation can inform the development of interventions and programs aimed at supporting early adolescents in their journey towards establishing a positive and cohesive identity.
