Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between adolescents’ bullying and aggression tendencies at junior secondary school and their subsequent engagement in delinquent behavior. Furthermore, the mediating role of self-control in this relationship is investigated. The study aims to enhance our understanding of the factors that contribute to delinquency among adolescents and to identify potential mechanisms that mediate this relationship.
A sample of junior secondary school students (N = [number of participants]) was recruited for the study. Participants completed self-report measures to assess their bullying and aggression tendencies, self-control, and engagement in delinquent behavior. Data analysis involved conducting correlational analyses, regression analyses, and mediation analyses to examine the hypothesized relationships.
The results revealed a positive association between adolescents’ bullying and aggression tendencies and their engagement in delinquent behavior. Additionally, self-control was found to mediate this relationship, suggesting that the level of self-control exhibited by adolescents plays a role in the link between bullying/aggression and delinquency. Specifically, lower levels of self-control were associated with higher levels of bullying and aggression tendencies, which, in turn, increased the likelihood of engaging in delinquent behavior.
These findings highlight the importance of addressing bullying and aggression tendencies among adolescents as potential risk factors for delinquency. Moreover, they underscore the crucial role of self-control in mitigating the negative impact of these tendencies on delinquent behavior. Interventions targeting the enhancement of self-control skills may be effective in reducing delinquency rates among adolescents by addressing the underlying mechanisms that contribute to their engagement in bullying and aggression.
The implications of these findings for the development of preventive and intervention programs aimed at reducing delinquency among adolescents are discussed. By fostering self-control skills and addressing bullying and aggression tendencies, educators, parents, and policymakers can contribute to creating a safer and more supportive school environment that promotes positive behavioral outcomes among adolescents.
