Abstract:
The use of computer-based tests (CBTs) in educational assessments has gained significant attention due to its potential to enhance learning outcomes and promote higher order thinking skills among students. This abstract focuses on the application of CBTs in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) as a means of fostering higher order thinking skills among undergraduate students at the University of Lagos.

This study aims to investigate the impact of CBTs on the development of higher order thinking skills among students at the University of Lagos. The research approach will involve a mixed-methods design, including quantitative data collection through pre- and post-test assessments and qualitative data collection through interviews and surveys.

The sample population will consist of undergraduate students enrolled in various disciplines at the University of Lagos who have taken the UTME using the CBT format. The study will examine the relationship between CBT usage and the development of higher order thinking skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning.

The quantitative analysis will involve the comparison of pre- and post-test scores to assess the improvement in higher order thinking skills among students who have experienced CBTs. The qualitative analysis will involve thematic analysis of interview transcripts and survey responses to gain deeper insights into the students’ perceptions and experiences related to CBTs and higher order thinking skills.

The expected outcomes of this study include identifying the strengths and limitations of CBTs in fostering higher order thinking skills among undergraduates. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and test developers in designing and implementing computer-based assessments that effectively promote higher order thinking skills.

Keywords: computer-based tests, unified tertiary matriculation examinations, higher order thinking skills, University of Lagos, critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical reasoning.
