Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between peer pressure, pornography, and attitudes towards premarital sex among adolescents in Lagos State. Adolescence is a critical period during which individuals form their attitudes and beliefs about sexuality, and they are susceptible to various external influences, such as peer pressure and exposure to pornography. Understanding the interplay between these factors is essential for developing effective strategies to promote healthy sexual behaviors among adolescents.
The study employed a quantitative research design and collected data through a self-administered questionnaire. A sample of 500 adolescents aged 13 to 19 years was selected from different secondary schools in Lagos State using a multi-stage sampling technique. The questionnaire assessed participants’ experiences of peer pressure, exposure to pornography, and attitudes towards premarital sex.
Preliminary findings indicate a significant positive correlation between peer pressure and attitudes towards premarital sex (r = 0.45, p < 0.01). Adolescents who reported higher levels of peer pressure were more likely to hold permissive attitudes towards premarital sex. Similarly, exposure to pornography demonstrated a significant positive association with attitudes towards premarital sex (r = 0.32, p < 0.01). Adolescents who reported frequent exposure to pornography were more likely to hold permissive attitudes towards premarital sex. Furthermore, the study also explored the mediating role of peer pressure in the relationship between exposure to pornography and attitudes towards premarital sex. The results revealed a significant indirect effect of exposure to pornography on attitudes towards premarital sex through peer pressure (β = 0.15, p < 0.01). This suggests that exposure to pornography influences attitudes towards premarital sex partially through increased susceptibility to peer pressure. These findings highlight the importance of addressing the influence of peer pressure and exposure to pornography in shaping adolescents' attitudes towards premarital sex. Comprehensive sexuality education programs should equip adolescents with the skills to resist negative peer influences and critically evaluate the messages portrayed in pornography. Additionally, parents, educators, and policymakers should collaborate to create a supportive environment that promotes healthy sexual attitudes and behaviors among adolescents. Keywords: Adolescents, peer pressure, pornography, premarital sex, attitudes, Lagos State.
