Abstract:
The aim of this study is to identify and explore the entrepreneurial skills required by retirees for successful walnut (Juglans nigra L.) production in Ondo State, Nigeria. With an aging population and a growing interest in agricultural ventures, retirement presents an opportune time for individuals to engage in entrepreneurial activities, such as walnut production. However, transitioning from a retirement lifestyle to becoming a successful walnut producer requires specific skills and knowledge.

This study employs a qualitative research approach, utilizing interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from retirees who have successfully ventured into walnut production in Ondo State. The participants were selected through purposive sampling, ensuring representation from different areas and backgrounds.

Preliminary findings indicate that several entrepreneurial skills are crucial for retirees to succeed in walnut production. These skills include:

Market Research and Business Planning: Retirees need to conduct thorough market research to identify the demand for walnuts, assess competition, and determine potential customers. Developing a comprehensive business plan helps retirees outline their goals, strategies, and financial projections.

Agricultural Knowledge and Skills: Retirees must acquire or enhance their knowledge of walnut production techniques, including planting, cultivation, pest and disease management, and harvesting. They also need to stay updated on industry trends and best practices.

Financial Management: Sound financial management skills are crucial for retirees entering the walnut production business. This includes budgeting, record-keeping, cost analysis, pricing strategies, and accessing financial resources or grants.

Marketing and Sales: Retirees should possess effective marketing and sales skills to promote their walnut products and reach potential customers. This may involve branding, packaging, online marketing, and establishing partnerships with distributors or retailers.

Networking and Collaboration: Building networks and collaborating with other walnut producers, agricultural experts, and relevant stakeholders can provide retirees with valuable knowledge, support, and market opportunities.

The findings from this study will contribute to the existing literature on entrepreneurship in agriculture, particularly among retirees. The identified entrepreneurial skills will serve as a guide for retirees interested in venturing into walnut production in Ondo State, enabling them to make informed decisions and enhance their chances of success. Further research can explore the challenges faced by retirees in acquiring and applying these skills and develop targeted training programs to support them in their entrepreneurial endeavors.
