Abstract:
Continuing education plays a crucial role in the professional development of teachers by enhancing their skills, updating their knowledge, and improving classroom practices. However, the participation of secondary school teachers in continuing education programmes can be influenced by various factors that need to be understood and addressed. This abstract provides an overview of the key factors influencing the participation of secondary school teachers in continuing education programmes in Delta State, Nigeria.

The study aims to identify and examine the factors that affect the involvement of secondary school teachers in continuing education programmes in Delta State. It adopts a mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The sample consists of secondary school teachers from different schools in Delta State.

The preliminary findings indicate that several factors influence teachers’ participation in continuing education programmes. Firstly, the availability of resources and infrastructure, such as training facilities, materials, and technological support, significantly impact teachers’ engagement. Limited access to these resources may hinder teachers from participating due to logistical constraints.

Secondly, the perceived relevance and alignment of the continuing education programmes with teachers’ professional needs and interests play a critical role. Teachers are more likely to participate when they perceive the programmes as directly applicable to their classroom practices and career advancement.

Thirdly, the support and encouragement from school administrators, colleagues, and educational authorities positively influence teacher participation. Adequate administrative support, including financial assistance, flexible scheduling, and recognition of participation, can incentivize teachers to engage in continuing education activities.

Additionally, personal factors, such as teachers’ motivation, attitudes towards professional development, and perceived benefits of participation, impact their willingness to enroll in continuing education programmes. Teachers who recognize the value of lifelong learning and view it as a means of professional growth are more likely to participate.

The research highlights the importance of addressing these factors to enhance the participation of secondary school teachers in continuing education programmes in Delta State. Recommendations include improving the availability of resources, designing relevant and tailored programmes, fostering a supportive school culture, and promoting the intrinsic benefits of professional development.

By understanding and addressing the factors influencing teacher participation, educational stakeholders can develop strategies that promote a culture of continuous learning among secondary school teachers in Delta State, ultimately leading to improved classroom practices and student outcomes.
